The first day of preschool is a big milestone—for little ones and their parents. While it's a day filled with excitement and fresh beginnings, it can also bring on a few jitters (and maybe a few tears). The good news? With a few intentional steps, the transition from home to classroom can be a smooth and positive experience for everyone.
Whether this is your first drop-off or you’re a returning parent with a new toddler in tow, these tips can help set the tone for a confident start.
👶 For Parents: Preparing You for the Big Day
Let’s be honest sometimes it’s harder on us than it is on them! Here’s how to help yourself and your child feel ready:
1. Visit the Classroom Beforehand
Let your child explore the space, meet the teacher, and see the cubbies and toys. Familiarity eases fear.
2. Talk About School in a Positive Light
Begin having conversations about what school will be like. Keep it upbeat and specific:
“You’ll get to paint, play with new friends, and have snack at your own little table!”
3. Validate Their Feelings
It’s okay if your child is nervous or unsure. Instead of saying “Don’t be scared,” try:
“It’s okay to feel a little nervous. Sometimes I get nervous before trying something new too!”
4. Plan for Your Goodbye
Decide ahead of time what your goodbye will look like and stick to it. Keep it loving but brief. Lingering can increase anxiety (yours and theirs!).
🧸 For Toddlers & Preschoolers: Tips for a Smooth Drop-Off
We love partnering with families to help children feel safe and confident at school. Here are tried-and-true strategies that help toddlers and preschoolers transition successfully:
1. Create a Goodbye Routine
A simple, predictable routine can be comforting. Try something like:
Stick with the same goodbye each day so your child knows what to expect.
2. Send a Comfort Item
A small stuffed animal, family photo, or lovey can offer comfort throughout the day.
3. Keep Goodbyes Short & Sweet
As hard as it may be, avoid sneaking out. A confident, cheerful goodbye lets your child know you trust their teachers and believe they’ll be okay.
4. Stick to the Routine
Consistency builds trust. Arrive at the same time each day, and stick to the daily rhythm as best you can. Children thrive on predictability.
5. Celebrate the Little Wins
Whether it’s walking into the building without tears or staying dry-eyed for the first five minutes—celebrate! Acknowledge bravery and effort.
đź’¬ A Note to Parents
If your child cries at drop-off—it’s okay. Truly. It’s a normal part of separation and doesn’t mean something is wrong. Our teachers are trained to comfort, distract, and engage your child in ways that help them quickly move into play and connection. Often, children settle just minutes after you leave.
And you’re not alone! Many parents shed a few tears in the car too (we see you!). You are entrusting us with your greatest treasure, and we honor that responsibility with great care and love. Sometimes just knowing you’re not the only one feeling all the feelings can make a world of difference.
